This year, it was Celine Song's A24 production 'Past Lives' that took home the gold for Best Feature at the annual Gotham awards. Beating out movies such as 'Passages, 'Showing Up' and 'A Thousand And One', the romance/drama continues it's underdog push for Oscar glory.
Elsewhere on the night, wins for acting were granted to Charles Melton and Lily Gladstone for their performances in Todd Haynes' 'May December' and Morissa Maltz's 'The Unknown Country'.
Melton faced some fierce competition within the 'Outstanding Supporting Performance' category, coming head to head with the likes of Rachel McAdams, Penelope Cruz and even Barbie's Ryan Gosling who is an early favourite for Oscar consideration.
Alongside Melton, Gladstone had no easy pathway to glory herself, as the actress was nominated alongside some very well-received performances of late such as Caliee Speany as Priscilla Presley in Sofia Coppola's 'Priscilla' and Greta Lee's performance in the Best Feature winner 'Past Lives'.
Andrew Haigh's metaphysical gay romance, 'All Of Us Strangers', was the leader for nominations at the annual Gotham Awards before the night began. Being recognised in categories such as Best International Feature, Outstanding Lead Performance, Outstanding Supporting Performance and Best Screenplay Award.
Although the annual Gotham Awards are known for recognizing smaller and more independent films, the Gotham Film and Media Institute recently removed it's $35million budget cap requirement for potential nominees.
To be fair to the institute, they made a bold attempt of trying to keep the nominated films to indie or arthouse only, but the recent change in rules meant that movies like Grete Gerwig's 'Barbie' was eligible for consideration, which could simply not be ignored.
Thank you, Gotham, for this award. It’s such an honor. It really means the world to receive it with my debut set in New York City, a city I live in and love deeply. - Celine Song, Director of A24's Past Lives.
