Following the gigantic release of Denis Villeneuve's blockbuster epic, 'Dune: Part 2', there are still a strong number of movies that gather a large amount of anticipation amongst movie-lovers everywhere.
Although the sci-fi/fantasy that is the second instalment in the 'Dune' franchise seems to be taking the industry by storm, claiming the existing title of #1 movie in the world, this may not be the case come the end of 2024. Here are a few examples of films that provide audiences with plenty of reasons to get excited.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire
The next instalment of the Godzilla x Kong franchise comes through the form of 'The New Empire' and from the mind of previous Godzilla x Kong director, Adam Wingard. The 41-year-old filmmaker has re-recruited existing cast members from the previous movie such as Rebecca Hall and Brian Tyree Henry to reappear in this film.
'Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire' will feature the two titular characters fighting alongside one another in order to defeat a colossal threat hidden deep within planet Earth, challenging their existence and the survival of the human race. The film will hit theaters everywhere in March 2024.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
Seven years after the most recent release in the 'Planet of the Apes' franchise, audiences are treated to the long-awaited and highly-anticipated 'Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes', which will see the dystopian world we have come to know over several movies, return to the big screens.
Years after the reign of the iconic Caesar, a young ape embarks on a journey that will inevitably lead him to question everything he was taught about the past and allow him to make choices that will define the future of apes and humans alike. The film is due to be released to theaters on May 24th, 2024.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
The newest and thrilling addition to the Mad Max franchise comes through the form of a prequel following the iconic Imperator Furiosa, previously played by Charlize Theron, titled 'Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga'. This time round, it is Anya Taylor-Joy who will take on the younger version of the iconic character as she falls into the hands of a great biker horde led by the warlord Dr Dementus.
Taking on the role of Dr Dementus is none other than Chris Hemsworth, who in the trailer, possesses a large amount of facial prosthetics, giving audiences an insight into something that they are yet to witness Hemsworth take on in previous roles. George Miller is the director of this film, and it is due for cinematic release on the 24th of May, 2024.
A Quiet Place: Day One
Following the immense success and large cult-like following of the previous two 'A Quiet Place' movies, it was only right that audiences were treated to a third instalment to the franchise, but this time, through the form of a prequel. Director, Michael Sarnoski, takes us all the way back to day one of the alien apocalypse that we have come to see over the past few years.
Joseph Quinn, Alex Wolff and Lupita Nyong'o are all set to star in this film and introduce completely new characters to the 'A Quiet Place' franchise. This also means that Emily Blunt will not reprise her role featured in the first two movies, and John Krasinski will also not be involved with production. The film is set to hit theaters on March 8th, 2024.
Deadpool & Wolverine
One of the highest anticipated movies not only of 2024, but maybe of all time, comes in the form of Shawn Levy's 'Deadpool & Wolverine'. The movie's trailer has already broken the record for most views within 24 hours from it's release, following it's debut at the 2024 Superbowl just a couple of weeks ago.
The film will serve as the third instalment into the Deadpool trilogy, re-introducing Hugh Jackman as the iconic Wolverine, following a 7-year 'retirement' from the role. Ryan Reynolds will also reprise his role as the favourable Deadpool, along with many other characters from the first two movies set to reappear. 'Deadpool & Wolverine' is released to theatres on July 26th, 204.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
36 years after portraying the iconic character of 'Beetlejuice', Michael Keaton is set to reprise the role in a new-take on the comedy/horror that has gained a cult-following since it's 1988 release. Winona Ryder is also set to reprise her role as Lydia Deetz, who also featured in the 1988 classic.
Both Ryder and Keaton will be joined by talented actress, Jenna Ortega, who will play the role of Deetz' daughter in this film. Director of the original, Tim Burton, is also returning to take on creative responsibilities for the remake/spin-off, with Brad Pitt joining him on the production team. 'Beetlejuice Beetlejuice' is set for cinematic release in September of 2024.
Joker: Folie a Deux
Talking of reprising iconic roles, Joaquin Phoenix is set to return as Arthur Fleck (aka the Joker) in the sequel to Todd Phillips' Academy Award winning drama, 'Joker'. This time around, Arthur Fleck will be joined by Lady Gaga, who will be portraying a new look at the character of Harley Quinn, previously brought to life by Margot Robbie in another universe.
The original 'Joker', which was originally intended as a solo movie, is known for it's strong subject matters and dark themes. And although we can expect much more of the same in the movie's sequel, there will also be the addition of the odd song here and there as the film is expected to fall under the 'musical' genre. 'Joker: Folie a Deux' is set for cinematic release in October of 2024.
Wicked Part 1
Following it's West End and Broadway domination over the past two decades, the time has come for audiences to be treat to a cinematic re-telling of the iconic story of 'Wicked', the tale that explains how the Wicked Witch of the West came to be. The story follows an unlikely friendship between iconic characters Elphaba and Glinda, both being educated in the ways of magic in the land of Oz as they both earn their individual titles that would allow them to appear in 'The Wizard of Oz'.
Cynthia Erivo is set to star as the leading role of, the Wicked Witch of the West, whereas Ariana Grande will star alongside her as the iconic character of Glinda. The pair will require the ability to relive the well-known songs that appear in the theatre-version of 'Wicked' as the movie falls under the musical/fantasy genre. 'Wicked Part 1' is set for cinematic release in November of 2024.
