For as long as people have been going to their local cinemas to watch movies, stunt performers have played a pivotal role in the movie-making process by regularly putting their bodies and their livelihood on the line in order to capture a moment on film.
And with the growing trend of appreciation and recognition for stunt performers within the industry, it has come to the attention of many movie lovers around the world that they would like to see stunt co-ordination receive the love it deserves at various awarding bodies.
Throughout decades we have seen actors awarded for acting, directors awarded for directing, writers awarded for writing, but very rarely it is that we see stunt performers awarded for... stunting?
Following the newest addition to the Academy Awards category reel of 'Casting Director' which is due to launch in two years time, pressure has been building amongst recent ceremonies for the Oscars to include a category dedicated to the art of stunt performing.
In a recent interview with Empire, Bill Kramer (Academy CEO), stated that "we're always open to those discussions" when questioned about the potential idea of adding a stunt-based category to future ceremonies.
At this year's ceremony on March 10th, we saw fellow Barbenheimer foes Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt provide a message of appreciation towards the stunt-performing community whilst promoting their new movie 'The Fall Guy', which sees Gosling portray a stunt-man who is mentally recovering from a tragic accident that took place whilst filming.
To include a category within the Academy Awards that was devoted to recognising the best pieces of stunt co-ordination within the industry would be a huge leap of success for the world of stunt performers, so let's hope the Academy, along with other major awarding bodies, answer our prayers.
