Hugely popular and high-demand actress, Sydney Sweeney, is set to shift gears once more as she is set to take on the first on-screen representation of 1990's boxer, Christy Martin. The 26-year-old is fresh off of the back of the success of hit rom/com 'Anyone But You' and Michael Mohan's horror film 'Immaculate', so taking on the role of a female boxer who rose to fame throughout the '90s will only prove Sweeney's depth even further.
Martin became well-known in America throughout the final decade of the 20th century and was described as the "female Rocky' via the mouths of several film producers back in the '90s. The naturally gifted fighter had her life transformed when she met her manager, Jim Martin, in 1989, who went on to become her husband.
The athlete made a platform for all female boxers around the world for her work in the sport, becoming the first woman to sign with iconic promoter, Don King, as well as the only female boxer to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated. Despite her good looks, charisma, resilience, and welterweight champion belt, Martin did struggle with tackling personal demons through the form of toxic relationships and a brutal attempt on her life.
The untitled project will fall under the direction of Australian filmmaker and screenwriter, David Michod, who has been responsible for films in the past such as 2010's 'Animal Kingdom' and 2019's 'The King', starring Timothee Chalamet. In a recent interview, Michon stated his passion for the project via the following:
I have a history of making movies about damaged men and I'd been wanting to make a film about a woman with a ferocious energy inside her. When I came across the Christy Martin story two years ago I knew I'd found her.
Actress, Sydney Sweeney, is in good spirits about taking on a role that requires such a physical transformation in order to fully encapsulate the presence that Christy Martin is. The Euphoria star stated that she "grappled and did kickboxing from 12-19 years old" and has "been itching to get back into the ring, traun and transform my body".
