Ever since it was announced that Todd Phillips' would be heading back to the director's chair to provide audiences with a sequel to the well-received and highly-praised 'Joker', there had been quite a divide amongst fans as to whether a second instalment was the right decision for the character of Arthur Fleck.
Some audience members were more than happy to hear that Arthur's story will continue, whereas some felt that 'Joker' should remain a standalone movie, as it was originally intended to be. Regardless of how this made fans feel, Warner Brothers and DC inevitably made the decision to green-light the a sequel to a comic book movie that garnered a total of 11 Oscar nominations, the most of it's kind.
Keep Todd Phillips in the directors chair and Joaquin Phoenix in a red blazer and bow tie, where they belong. Throw in Gaga and a variety of musical performances, turning any existing expectations of what this movie would be onto it's head, and you're onto a winner.
In the official trailer to Todd Phillips' 'Joker: Folie à Deux', we pick up with Arthur Fleck right where we left off back in 2019. In a maximum security prison, with little to no freedom against his name whatsoever. The line 'Hey Fleck, you got a joke for us today?', implies that although Arthur has been stripped of his rights and responsibilities, he's still been finding the time to tell the odd joke here and there, as dark as they may be.
One thing that we can interpret from this trailer that seems to have stepped up a considerable amount from the first instalment, is the number of stunning cinematic sequences scattered throughout. The entire 2 minute and 26 second runtime more or less conveys itself as a showreel of eye-catching stills. Potentially something that Phillips and cinematographer, Lawrence Sher, were keen to up their game on for the second instalment.
Throughout the trailer, we very much see the screen time split between Phoenix and Gaga. Phoenix of course as his dark and twisted version of the Joker, and Lady Gaga as the newest rendition of Harley Quinn. And I know what you thinking: 'We thought Margot Robbie was Harley Quinn?'.
Well, following the recent takeover of James Gunn over in the DC Universe, no one really knows who is who anymore. But Lady Gaga portraying a dark and mentally-affected Harley Quinn is a dream come true for cinema-lovers, so let's not fight over the legalities of the role and just enjoy the casting for what it is.
