Disney's 'The Bikeriders' Being Shopped To Rival Studios

'The Bikeriders' is the latest addition to the filmography of well-respected director, Jeff Nichols, and includes an impressive cast ensemble consisting of Austin Butler, Tom Hardy and Jodie Comer.

However, fans waiting in anticipation for the latest creation from the mind of Jeff Nichols will have to wait a little while longer as the film is now being offered to rival companies, after Disney have recently dropped it from it's upcoming schedule.

Disney and 20th Century had original intentions of providing the film with a release date of December 1st. Meaning that the production would qualify for Academy Award consideration, thanks to a 2023 release.

But the films backer, New Regency, opted against releasing the movie for a cinematic release at all back in October 2023, during the worldwide actors' strike.

'The Bikeriders' had an initial production budget of over $40 million and debuted at the Telluride Film Festival over Labor Day weekend. But due to the recent actions taken by New Regency, it is expected that the film will have to wait until 2024 for a theatrical release.

New Regency currently hold a distribution deal with Disney's 20th Century Studios. The most recent production amongst the two conglomerates was Gareth Edwards' dystopian Sci-fi 'The Creator'. The film, starring John David Washington, went on to gross over $103 million, despite a budget of only $80 million.

Moving back even earlier, the two companies also collaborated on David O. Russell's 2022 box office failure 'Amsterdam'. Despite an impressive cast that are destined to sell tickets on their own right, fans had no interest in seeing comedic 'who-dunnit?', as the movie made a loss of over $45 million at the global box office.

Multiple sources state that the idea to ship off 'The Bikeriders' was down to the fault of New Regency and was not Disney's decision whatsoever. It is still very unclear as to whether Disney will remain on the hook to release the film if no rival companies succeed in purchasing the distribution rights.
