Barbie Makes History At The Critic's Choice Awards

Greta Gerwig's pop-culture phenomenon 'Barbie' not only raised the bar at the box office upon it's cinematic release back in July, but has no made history as the most nominated movie at the annual Critic's Choice Awards.

The title of most nominated movie was previously held by two films, those being Guillermo Del Toro's 'The Shape Of Water' and the Daniel's 'Everything Everywhere All At Once', both with a total of 14 nominations. It's worth nothing that both of these films went on to win the Best Picture award at the Oscars later on in their respective seasons.

But Gerwig's star-filled and highly entertaining take on the Barbie doll has now surpassed that record with a total of 18 nominations, recognised in categories such as best picture, director, actress, supporting actress, supporting actor and best original song (three different entries).

Closely following 'Barbie' and nearly breaking the original record itself were Christopher Nolan's 'Oppenheimer' and Yorgos Lanthimos' 'Poor Things'. Both productions received an impressive total of 13 nominations at the Critics Choice Awards, both tied for second best.

These three movies will be competing for the prestigious best picture award when the annual event takes place on January 14th alongside fellow nominees such as 'American Fiction', 'The Color Purple', 'The Holdover's', 'Past Lives', 'Saltburn' and Bradley Cooper's Leonard Bernstein biopic, 'Maestro'.

The Best Actor category across various awarding bodies seems to be following a similar trend. With the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, Cillian Murphy, Jeffrey Wright and Paul Giamatti all receiving a smuthering of nominations of late. The case is no different for the Critics Choice Awards.

America Ferrara surprisingly joins the heavily-nominated duo of Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling with recognition for her supporting performance in 'Barbie', making the Latino actress one of the films four acting nominations out of it's eighteen nominations in total.

Todd Haynes' 'May December' continues it's impressive push for Academy Award recognition with a further three nominations from the Critic's Choice. With the film receiving honours for it's original screenplay, as well as acting nominations for both Charles Melton and Julianne Moore.

Although a clear frontrunner is yet to emerge throughout this awards season, much like the Best Actor category, the Best Director lineup seems to have remained fairly consistent throughout various awarding bodies. With well-respected filmmakers such as Christopher Nolan, Yorgos Lanthimos, Greta Gerwig, Martin Scorsese, Alexander Payne and Bradley Cooper all receiving a nomination for their direction from the Critics.
