Whilst the Screen Actors Guild Awards serve the important purpose of allowing actors to celebrate their fellow performers and the work they have done over the past twelve months, where there are people who are nominated, there are always people who are not.
The annual SAG nominations, which this year were announced this previous Wednesday, have become famous for their ability to align very closely with the acting categories for the Academy Award nominations, which are due to be announced on January 19th.
Therefore, those who take it upon themselves to attempt to predict the Oscar nominations each year when the time comes around, will pay very close attention to the names that are read out at the annual SAG nominee announcement.
But although there are many exceptional performances that have been credited by the Screen Actors Guild this year, we are here to discuss those who may have just fallen short.
Here are the actors who PrimeTime Films feel were robbed of a SAG nomination for their work over the last twelve months:
Guy Pearce - The Brutalist
Although the Best Supporting Actor category is filled with brilliant performances, each one just as deserving of a nomination as the last, the exclusion of Guy Pearces name from this list will have been on no one's bingo card for 2025.
In 'The Brutalist', we see Pearce take on the role of Harrison Lee Van Buren Sr., a wealthy and prominent industrialist who notices László Tóths talent for architecture, and allows him to forge a new and improved lifestyle.
The Australian actor recently received a Golden Globe nomination for his work in this film, and despite missing out at the SAG Awards, is still in line to receive his maiden Academy Award nomination next week.
Who would we have swapped him for? Jonathan Bailey - Wicked
Margaret Qualley - The Substance
Not only does Margaret Qualley deliver a performance much worthy of a SAG nomination, that also matches the standards of her co-star Demi Moore (who was nominated), but the fact that Qualley produced an exceptional body of work in 2024 certainly shouldn't have hurt her case to say the least.
Qualley does a brilliant job of portraying 'Sue', the younger, prettier and much more energetic split personality to Demi Moores 'Elisabeth Sparkle'. This role is nothing like what we have seen Qualley take on in the past, and the young actress certainly takes full advantage of her large chunk of screen time in this film.
Who would we have swapped her for? Jamie Lee Curtis - The Last Showgirl
Sebastian Stan - A Different Man
Over the last twelve months, Sebastian Stan has proven to film lovers that he is very capable of handling a wider variety of dramatic roles within the industry, and that his talents have been underutilised by Marvel for far too long.
Whilst most of us know Stan as the ruthless and cold-hearted Winter Soldier in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this year we got to see the Romanian-born actor as a man who undergoes a radical medical procedure to drastically transform his physical appearance, only to find his dream becoming a nightmare as he becomes obsessed with reclaiming what he has now lost.
The fact that Stan picked up the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture (Comedy/Musical) for his performance in 'A Different Man' is the clearest form of evidence that he is more than worthy of a SAG nomination.
Who would we have swapped him for? Daniel Craig - Queer
Denzel Washington - Gladiator II
Although it may be easy to assess every performance that Denzel Washington has given us throughout his career and argue that they are all worthy of a SAG nomination, the veteran's work in 'Gladiator II' is unquestionably deserving of recognition from the guild.
In Ridley Scotts sequel to the 2000 masterpiece we call 'Gladiator', Washington takes on the role of Macrinus, a wealthy yet mischievous citizen of Rome who's thirst for power sees him take Paul Mescals Lucius under his wing, in an attempt to claim the throne.
Washington was recognised at the Golden Globes just last week, and although the performance has never been spoken about within winning territory, it was predicted that the veteran actor would be included in the Best Supporting Actor list at the SAG Awards.
Who would we have swapped him for? Jonathan Bailey - Wicked
